Yankee Museum To Hold Polishing Party Saturday

4/3/09 – For anyone who has a love for vintage aircraft, an event this weekend in Ypsilanti will provide a rare chance to get up close and personal. The Yankee Air Museum is hosting their 14th annual Polishing Party and Bomber Buffing event in which the general public is invited to help become a crew member for a few hours to a B-17, B-25 or C-47 aircraft. Bruce Stoddart of Pinckney is a crew member on the Yankee Warrior B-25 and says participants can touch the aircraft, crawl all over them and take as many pictures as they want. In exchange, they have to bring some elbow grease and help polish the planes so they are ready for airshow season. The polishing party starts Saturday morning at 9am at the Yankee Air Museum hangar at Willow Run Airport. It’s free and open to the public and all those who pitch in will be served a hot dog lunch. Details can be downloaded below. (JK)

Cultural Master Plan Public Forum

Posted by ppna on March 20, 2009

YPSILANTI—The Arts Alliance will host a regional public forum to discuss the Washtenaw County Cultural Master Plan and steps to customize the plan to meet the needs of our community. Anyone interested in the future of arts and culture in the Ypsilanti area is welcome to attend the forum which will take place at the Riverside Art Center on March 31, 2009 from 7:15pm-9pm. The presentation will focus on what the cultural plan is, how it was developed and how the Arts Alliance will be working to customize the plan to meet the needs of the Ypsilanti area.

The Washtenaw County Cultural Master Plan provides a vision for cultural development throughout the county over the next five years. Its recommendations fall into six strategic areas that were identified from the direct input of nearly 5,000 Washtenaw County residents through an online survey, an artists’ census, a study of the area’s creative economy, and in 29 interviews and community forums. The six strategic areas include Lifelong Arts & Education; Creative Economic Development; Capacity Building, Funding, and Investment; Communications, Audience Development, and Advocacy; Cultural Facilities; and Diversity and Access. Participants at the March 31, 2009 public forum will prioritize these six strategic areas and will begin brainstorming the next steps involved for developing a plan specific to the Ypsilanti area. A final customized report will be available in June 2009.

“We look forward to working with the Ypsilanti area and the other population centers throughout the county to help customize the cultural master plan,” said Tamara Real, President of the Arts Alliance. “The success of this plan greatly depends on each community’s involvement, and for this reason we felt very strongly about working in partnership with each community. We recognize that not every community will have the same needs and priorities, and through these public forums we hope to address the most important next steps for everyone as we move forward with implementing the cultural plan.”

If you plan to attend this public forum, please RSVP to Angela Martín-Barcelona, Marketing Director at the Arts Alliance at angela@annarborchamber.org.

Hazardous Waste Drop off Day is Saturday November 1st

Posted by ppna on October 27, 2008

Somewhere I had a flyer for this but you’ll just have to be on the look out for the information yourself. As far as I remember this is your opportunity to drop off freon based appliances (AC and refrigerators), tires, household chemicals, monitors, and that type of crap. It will be at the EMU convocation center parking lot. Drop off is free but a $10.00 donation is recommended (Remember the city doesn’t pick this stuff up because it costs money to have it disposed of properly.)

I think it runs from 9-4:30pm

Energy Conference and Expo at EMU Oct 31st and Nov 1st

Posted by ppna on October 27, 2008

Check out the Remodel Green Expo coming to EMU this weekend. The conference sessions look pretty good — The cost for the seminars is $79 for 6 which isn’t bad at all. There is also going to be an EXPO which is free to students $5.00 to the general public. I hope everyone gets out to find ways to make their homes a little more efficient.

Ghost Hunters Spoted on Michigan Avenue

Posted by ppna on October 22, 2008

Last night, Tuesday the 21st, a team from ParaHaunt came to the Downtown Library to talk about what they do. If you don’t know, my friends and I are starting YPI (Ypsilanti Paranormal Investigators) as soon as we get some tools and T-shirts so this talk was to be very interesting to us. As far as I could tell they didn’t have any real evidence besides stories which may or may not have been true but such is the world of Ghost Hunting. We were informed that the head guy has noticed an increase in Demon possessions over your typical ghost hauntings he attributed this to the coming of the end of the world.

I did appreciate the folks from ParaHaunt coming out and talking to the group. I think the library should get great respect for bringing ghost hunters to speak. All in all it was a good night especially after I noticed that the Tap Room has Black Label for a dollar a can between 9 and 11pm M-Thursday.
